In the lead-up to the T20 World Cup 2026, fresh reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached former India captain MS Dhoni with an offer to return as the team’s mentor. Dhoni, who played the same role briefly during the T20 World Cup 2021 under then-head coach Ravi Shastri, is once again being considered to guide the Indian side.

According to CricBlogger, a BCCI source confirmed that Dhoni’s presence could prove vital in shaping the mindset and performance of the squad. However, the report adds that Dhoni is unlikely to accept the offer, given Gautam Gambhir’s position as the current head coach. The two share a mixed relationship from their playing days, which may weigh on the decision.

“Dhoni is again offered to mentor Indian cricket,” the BCCI source was quoted as saying.

Back in 2021, when Dhoni was brought in as mentor, India endured a disappointing campaign, failing to qualify for the semi-finals after managing only three wins from five group matches. Australia went on to lift the trophy that year.

Speculation around Dhoni’s future continues as well. Reports suggest that the Chennai Super Kings legend may retire from all forms of the game after IPL 2026, scheduled to take place just weeks after the World Cup. While the opportunity to have Dhoni in the Indian dressing room could be a huge morale boost for the squad, his acceptance appears unlikely at this stage.

With more than four months to go before the tournament begins, the situation remains fluid. All eyes will be on whether Dhoni’s involvement materialises, or if Gambhir continues to lead the team’s preparations single-handedly.
