In a major move that’s set to bring financial relief and clean energy to millions, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced a major initiative to provide free electricity to households consuming up to 125 units per month. Starting August 1, 2025 — effective from the July bill itself — this decision is expected to benefit around 1.67 crore families across the state.
Nitish Kumar, in a post on Twitter, emphasized the state government’s long-standing commitment to ensuring electricity reaches every home at affordable rates. This latest decision takes that vision a step further by removing the burden of electricity bills for a significant portion of the population. Households falling within the 125-unit monthly usage threshold won’t need to pay a single rupee for their electricity — a move likely to ease financial pressure for many, especially low-income families.

Looking beyond immediate relief, the government is also laying the groundwork for a greener future. Over the next three years, the plan is to install solar power systems for these domestic consumers — either on rooftops or in nearby public spaces, based on mutual consent. The idea is not just to reduce the electricity bill, but also to shift toward sustainable energy that can power the state for years to come.
For extremely poor families falling under the Kutir Jyoti scheme, the government will fully fund the installation of these solar units. Others will receive substantial support, ensuring that the transition to solar energy is inclusive and equitable. If all goes according to plan, Bihar could see the generation of up to 10,000 megawatts of solar power within the next three years — a significant step in boosting the state’s renewable energy capacity.
