If you binged Dark Matter on Apple TV+ last year, you’re probably still reeling from that wild finale. The sci-fi thriller, starring Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, had us all hooked with its multiverse-hopping plot and emotional punches. Now, the big question: Is Dark Matter getting a Season 2? Here’s everythibg we know so far.

Is Dark Matter Season 2 Officially Confirmed?

Good news, fans! Apple TV+ gave Dark Matter the green light for Season 2 back in August 2024, not long after Season 1 wrapped up on June 26. That’s a pretty fast turnaround, which shows how much faith the streamer has in the series. With an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 7.7/10 on IMDb, it’s no surprise—viewers and critics loved the show’s brainy twists and heartfelt moments.

When Could Dark Matter Season 2 Hit Screens?

No official release date yet, but let’s piece together some clues. Filming for Season 2 kicked off in Chicago in February 2025, according to posts from Crouch and Edgerton on X. Season 1 took about 20 months from start to finish (filming began October 2022, premiered May 2024). If Season 2 follows a similar timeline, we’re looking at a release sometime between late 2025 and early 2026.

That said, some Apple TV+ shows like Silo have managed faster production cycles, closer to 14 months. Others, like Severance, have dragged on due to delays. Dark Matter seems to be chugging along smoothly, so I’m betting on fall 2025 at the earliest, maybe spring 2026 at the latest. Fingers crossed!

Who’s Coming Back for the Cast?

The multiverse setup of Dark Matter means anyone could pop up in a new reality, but here’s who we’re pretty sure will return based on the Season 1 finale and recent reports:

  • Joel Edgerton as Jason Dessen (and his doppelgängers): Our main guy, the physicist stuck in a reality-swapping mess, is definitely back. Edgerton’s also an executive producer, so he’s got a big stake in the show.
  • Jennifer Connelly as Daniela Dessen: Jason’s wife stole hearts in Season 1, and she’s confirmed to return.
  • Oakes Fegley as Charlie Dessen: Their son had a huge moment picking their new reality in the finale, so expect him to stick around.
  • Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas: She ended Season 1 in a futuristic Chicago with Ryan, and Braga’s likely to show up again.
  • Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder: The scientist pal who got zapped to another world could have a meatier role this time.
  • Dayo Okeniyi as Leighton Vance: With two Leightons out there—one rich and scheming, one not so lucky—he’s a safe bet to return.
  • Amanda Brugel as Blaire Caplan: Word is she’s been bumped up to a recurring role, so we’ll see more of her.

There’s also talk of new faces joining the cast to flesh out whatever crazy new worlds we’re visiting, but nothing’s been announced yet. We’ll update this if any casting scoops drop.

What’s the Story for Dark Matter Season 2?

Here’s where things get tricky. Season 1 used up all of Crouch’s novel, which was a standalone story. The finale, called “Entanglement,” left Jason1, Daniela, and Charlie jumping into the Box—the device that lets them hop between realities—to escape a swarm of alternate Jasons. Charlie picked their next world, but we didn’t see where they landed. Cue the cliffhanger!

So, what’s next? Season 2 will be totally original, not based on any book. Crouch has teased “new worlds and bigger stakes,” which could mean anything from a dystopian hellscape to a reality where Jason’s a rock star (okay, probably not that). Here’s what we think we’ll see:

Life in the New Reality: The Dessens will have to adjust to wherever Charlie’s choice took them. Will it be a paradise or a nightmare?

Those Creepy Jasons: The finale showed a bunch of Jason variants still chasing Daniela and Charlie. Are they still a threat, or will some, like Jason2, try to make amends?

Amanda and Ryan’s Journey: They’re in that sleek, futuristic Chicago. Will their story tie back to the Dessens, or are we getting a side adventure?

More Multiverse Madness: Crouch loves playing with identity and choice, so expect deeper dives into what makes each character tick across different realities.

Some fans worry Season 2 might lose the magic since the book’s story is done. Crouch’s Wayward Pines stumbled in its second season without his direct involvement, but he’s all in on Dark Matter, so I’m hopeful he’ll keep the quality high.
