Bharti Airtel has officially called off discussions with the Tata Group regarding a potential merger of their Direct-To-Home (DTH) businesses. The company, through a regulatory filing dated May 3, 2025, informed the stock exchanges that both parties have mutually decided to terminate the discussions after failing to arrive at a satisfactory resolution.
Earlier in February 2025, Bharti Airtel had disclosed that it was in bilateral discussions with Tata Group to explore a possible combination of Tata Play Limited—the DTH arm of the Tata Group—with Bharti Telemedia Limited, a subsidiary of Airtel.
However, after several rounds of talks, no agreement could be reached. “After not being able to find a satisfactory resolution, the parties have mutually decided to terminate the discussions,” the company stated in its letter to NSE and BSE.
The proposed deal, if successful, would have marked a major consolidation in India’s DTH sector. Bharti Telemedia operates the Airtel Digital TV service, while Tata Play is one of the other major players in the segment.
Investors and industry observers will now look for Bharti Airtel’s next move in the competitive DTH and digital content space.
