EKI Energy Services Ltd has been appointed as the Carbon Consultant for the Varanasi Smart City Bio-Conversion Methane Reduction Project, a significant milestone in India’s climate-focused urban development. This project is expected to reduce 33,187 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions over a seven-year crediting period and forms part of the government’s SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) initiative.
The project, based in Shahanshahpur, Varanasi, uses anaerobic digestion technology to process approximately 70 tonnes per day of animal manure and organic feedstock, converting it into 2,500–2,800 kg/day of compressed biogas (CBG). It also produces fermented organic manure (FOM) and liquid organic manure (LFOM), promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

The CEO of Varanasi Smart City, Mr. Akshat Verma, praised the initiative as the first of its kind in any Indian smart city. With a lifespan of 25 years, this project is expected to serve as a replicable model for urban waste-to-energy systems.
