In a major milestone, India’s coal sector has surpassed the one billion tonne mark in cumulative production for the financial year 2024-25, reaching 1,047.57 million tonnes (provisional). This represents a 4.99% increase from the 997.83 million tonnes produced in FY24, highlighting the Ministry of Coal’s push toward energy security and self-reliance.

Commercial, captive, and other entities recorded a robust 28.11% year-on-year growth, contributing 197.50 million tonnes in FY25 compared to 154.16 million tonnes in the previous year.

Coal dispatches also crossed the 1 billion tonne milestone, touching 1,024.99 million tonnes—up 5.34% from FY24’s 973.01 million tonnes. Dispatches from commercial, captive, and other producers stood at 196.83 million tonnes, showing a strong 31.39% growth over the 149.81 million tonnes dispatched in FY24.

This achievement is being seen as a testament to improved production, efficient dispatch systems, and the government’s commitment to reducing import dependency while ensuring sustainable coal mining practices.
