Cricket fans are set for a historic clash in 2027 as Australia and England will face off in a day-night Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to commemorate the 150th anniversary of men’s Test cricket. The match, scheduled for March 11-15, 2027, will be the first-ever men’s pink-ball Test at the iconic venue.
A Historic Tribute to the First-Ever Test Match
- The match mirrors the first-ever Test match, which was played between Australia and England at the MCG in March 1877.
- However, unlike the traditional red-ball format of the inaugural match and the Centenary Test in 1977, this landmark fixture will be played under lights with a pink ball.
Australia’s Strong Record in Day-Night Tests
- Australia has dominated the pink-ball format, winning 12 out of 13 day-night Test matches played so far.
- The decision to host this special event as a day-night Test aims to boost global viewership and attract larger crowds.
Cricket Australia’s Vision
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg highlighted the importance of the match, stating:
“The 150th Anniversary Test at the MCG will be one of the great cricket events, and playing under lights will be a fantastic way to celebrate both our game’s rich heritage and Test cricket’s modern evolution.”
This milestone event is expected to recreate unforgettable moments, much like the Centenary Test in 1977, which saw legendary performances from David Hookes and Rick McCosker.
The pink-ball Test at the MCG is set to be a spectacular occasion, adding another chapter to the storied rivalry between Australia and England in Test cricket.
