Mohammed Shami had a moment to forget in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand, dropping a straightforward caught-and-bowled chance off Rachin Ravindra before leaving the field due to a hand injury scare. The missed opportunity added to India’s frustration, especially as Shami had dropped a similar chance in the semi-final against Australia, when he put down Travis Head on the very first ball of the innings.

The latest drop came during Shami’s follow-through, as he bowled a fullish delivery angling towards middle and leg. Ravindra attempted a punch, but the bat twisted in his hands, sending the ball back towards the bowler. Shami initially got into position but seemed to lose sight of the ball, with his hands blocking his vision. His left leg was airborne as he tried to take the catch on the move, but the ball burst through his fingers and landed behind him.

Injury concern for India

To make matters worse for India, Shami was seen calling for the physio immediately after the drop. The ball appeared to have struck his hand hard, and after finishing the over, he walked off the field for medical attention.

Shami’s absence could be a significant blow for India, given his experience and wicket-taking ability. His struggles with caught-and-bowled chances have now come under scrutiny, especially after his earlier drop against Australia nearly proved costly.
