The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey as the new Chairman of SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) for an initial tenure of three years.

The government order stated:

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

Transition in SEBI Leadership

  • Pandey replaces Madhabi Puri Buch, whose tenure ends on March 1, 2025.
  • Buch, who took office on March 2, 2022, was the first woman to lead SEBI.
  • Before her, Ajay Tyagi served for five years (2017-2022), and U.K. Sinha held the position for six years (2011-2017).
  • The government had invited applications for the SEBI Chairperson post in January, with February 17, 2025, set as the deadline.

Pandey’s appointment comes at a crucial time, as SEBI continues to strengthen regulatory oversight, enhance market transparency, and drive investor protection initiatives.
