Shaktikanta Das, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has been appointed as ‘Principal Secretary-2’ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The decision was made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, with no fixed tenure specified.
Das, a former IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, has worked in public service for more than 42 years, focusing in infrastructure, investment, taxation and finance. He served on the 15th Finance Commission, represented India as a G20 Sherpa and was the 25th governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
Das holds a Master’s degree from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University. Before joining RBI, he served as the special commissioner and commissioner of revenue administration for the Tamil Nadu government. Additionally, he has held key positions in major organizations, including a three-year term as a non-executive director at Indian Bank until December 2012. He was also a director at ONGC and LIC.
During his six-year tenure at RBI, Das became the second-longest-serving governor in its history. He played a crucial role in transforming RBI’s communication strategy, ensuring transparency and clarity in monetary policies.
