The Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has inaugurated a state-of-the-art incubation facility at Salt Lake, Kolkata. This initiative aims to promote innovation-driven entrepreneurship, boost IT exports, and strengthen the IT/ITeS industry in West Bengal.
The facility was inaugurated by Shri Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry and Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India. During the event, he emphasized India’s vision to become a global technology hub, stating:
“The inauguration of the new STPI incubation facility in Kolkata reaffirms our commitment to fostering innovation, supporting startups, and ensuring inclusive growth across regions. With India rapidly advancing in Artificial Intelligence and digital innovation, this initiative will provide equitable access to emerging technologies for researchers, students, and entrepreneurs.”
Key Features of the STPI Kolkata Incubation Facility:
- State-of-the-art infrastructure spanning 200,000 sq. ft., including 75,000 sq. ft. of incubation space.
- Advanced technology setup, including high-speed data communication and digital resources to support IT/ITeS startups.
- Comprehensive mentorship programs, industry collaboration, and global networking opportunities for entrepreneurs.
- Employment generation through the creation of direct and indirect job opportunities in the region.
India’s Expanding Tech Ecosystem
Since its inception in 1991, STPI has played a crucial role in India’s IT sector, growing from a few centers to 67 operational locations across the country, with 59 in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The organization has also launched 24 domain-specific Centres of Entrepreneurship (CoEs) focused on HealthTech, MedTech, Blockchain, IoT, and Agritech, helping startups scale their innovations for global markets.
Driving India’s Digital Vision
The establishment of this facility is aligned with the Digital India mission, supporting the government’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative by promoting entrepreneurship and innovation across the nation. Shri Arvind Kumar, Director General, STPI, highlighted that this incubation center will help startups develop frontier technologies such as AI, IoT, Blockchain, and FinTech, positioning Kolkata as a key hub for emerging digital advancements.
The event was attended by key IT industry stakeholders, including Shri Manojit Sengupta (TCS), Shri Ujjwal Mukherjee (Concentrix Daksh Services), and Shri Jitendra Chaddah (GlobalFoundries Engineering).
This initiative is expected to foster an innovation-led digital ecosystem, drive IT exports, and strengthen India’s position as a leader in technology development.
