Authorities in Varanasi have temporarily suspended the iconic Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and other major ghats, including Sheetla Ghat and Assi Ghat, till February 5 due to an overwhelming influx of devotees returning from the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The decision aims to manage crowd control and prevent potential safety concerns.
Sushant Mishra, President of Ganga Seva Nidhi, confirmed that the restriction applies to the general public, urging visitors and locals to cooperate during this period. Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal also appealed to residents of Kashi to avoid unnecessary outings and support devotees during the ongoing rush.
The surge in crowds has led to significant disruptions, with many devotees stranded at Varanasi Cantt and Banaras railway stations. Train cancellations and overcrowded services have left people unable to board their scheduled trains.
Among those affected, Bobby Maya Limbu from Assam mentioned missing her train after reaching Varanasi due to the rush, while Dinanath from Gaya has been stuck for two days with his family at a night shelter near the railway station.
Night shelter manager Rajat Singh revealed that the facility was specially established for Kumbh pilgrims, but it lacks food arrangements. Assistant Commissioner of Police Vidush Saxena assured that security forces are patrolling the area, urging pilgrims to delay their travel plans until the situation normalizes.
This temporary suspension is a precautionary measure as authorities work to ensure safety amid the massive influx of pilgrims and devotees during the Kumbh season.
