Last year, South Indian movies almost outperformed Bollywood at the box office, reigniting the South Vs Bollywood debate. Recently, Rakesh Roshan, during a conversation with Times Now, said that while South cinema have progressed technically, it still focuses on old-school story telling. It seems that the comment by the filmmaker did not sit right with the Reddit users.

Rakesh shared his take on South cinema’s progress saying, during an interview with Zoom, “South films are very grounded. They’re continuing with the old-school format of song-action-dialogue-emotions. They’re not progressing. Technically, they are, but storytelling-wise, they’re sticking to the same formulas that work. They’re successful because they’re not breaking any path.”

He explained that South cinema prefers to play it safe, whereas Bollywood is the one who takes risks. He shared his own instance, recalling how after Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai, he did not make romantic films again. He chose to make Koi.. Mil Gaya, and after that he introduced a superhero film series – Krrish. “These are the challenges we took. They don’t take risks. They play on safe grounds,” noted Rakesh.

His remarks have drawn criticism on Reddit, where one of the users commented, “Bollywood’s own arrogance is its downfall.” Another user drew examples saying, “What about Eega? Can a Bollywood movie with a fly as the hero break any records? Bollywood is also currently surviving on the same male testosterone-driven action films like Jawan, Gadar 2, Pathaan, and Animal. One Stree 2 doesn’t change that. Dangal and Bajrangi Bhaijaan are almost a decade old now.”

Rakesh Roshan speaking facts. A film like Dangal, Stree2 or Bajrangi Bhaijaan could never break records in Tollywood.
