United States-led international coalition troops have withdrawn from Iraq’s Taji military base and handed it over to Iraqi security forces, the coalition has said.

The base, about 15 kilometres north of Baghdad, had been the site of frequent rocket attacks by Iran-backed militias in recent months.

The coalition military personnel movement is part of “a long-range plan” coordinated with the Iraqi government, the coalition said.

While remaining coalition troops will depart in the coming days after finalising the handing over of equipment to Iraq’s security forces, it added.
