Joseph DeAngelo, also known as the “Golden State Killer”, has been sentenced to life in prison. The landmark ruling marks the culmination of a crime investigation that started in the 1970s.

Honorary Judge Michael Bowman delivered the sentence in the Sacramento Superior Court in California.

DeAngelo pleaded guilty in the month of June to 13 murders as well as 13 rape-related charges, the Associated Press reported.

The former California police officer was arrested on April 24, 2018 after his DNA was found on a commercial genealogy website.
