UK PM Boris Johnson announced fines of up to £10,000 for those who break self-isolation rules in England.
New fines for those violating self-isolation rules will start at £1,000, but could increase to up to £10,000 for repeat offences and for the most egregious breaches.
The new move comes as Johnson weighs tougher measures amid fears the UK could require a “circuit break” or see death tolls of hundreds a day within weeks.
“The best way we can fight this virus is by everyone following the rules and self-isolating if they’re at risk of passing on coronavirus,” Johnson said in a statement.
Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, has also put the capital on alert for further restrictions.
