The Congress party has announced that the last rites of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will take place on Saturday, December 28, 2024, as confirmed by Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal. An official announcement is expected soon.
Congress Pays Tribute
KC Venugopal, speaking in Delhi late Thursday night, described Dr. Manmohan Singh as a “real icon” of both the Congress and the nation.
“Dr. Manmohan Singh was the real icon of the Congress and the country. A post-independence hero. His mission and ability to govern the country was witnessed by everyone,” said Venugopal.
He also announced the cancellation of all Congress programs for the next seven days, including the Congress Foundation Day, which was scheduled for December 28.
Body Arrives at Residence
Dr. Manmohan Singh’s body was moved to his residence at 3 Motilal Nehru Marg late Thursday night from AIIMS, where he had passed away earlier in the evening.
Senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, visited the residence to pay their respects. Rahul Gandhi, the Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, also returned to Delhi from Karnataka to mourn the loss.
A Nation Mourns
Dr. Singh passed away on Thursday evening at AIIMS, Delhi, at the age of 92, due to age-related health issues. The former Prime Minister suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home before being rushed to the hospital.
The Congress and the nation mourn the loss of a leader whose vision and dedication were pivotal in shaping modern India’s economic and political landscape.
