The majestic tabla maestro and composer, Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 in the United States, on Sunday.

The music composer was rushed to hospital, in San Francisco, due to serious health concerns. As per a report by PTI, Zakir was admitted to ICU following heart related problems. The news were confirmed by his close friend, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia. A source had also mentioned that he was facing blood pressure issues.

In a conversation with PTI, Rakesh shared Ustad’s health update and mentioned that he is currently hospitalized and is receiving treatment for his heart- related issue over the past week.

Zakir Hussain, the son of legendary tabla tabla virtuoso Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, was a renowned name not only in Indian music, but globally as well. He began is tabla journey at the age of 7, and was already performing across India at 12. Throughout his life, he has made remarkable contribution to Indian classical and world music.

He was also honored with several awards including Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
