Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has given adjournment motion notice in Lok Sabha demanding discussion on the status of clause 6 of the Assam Accord.

On Wednesday, Union minister of state for home G Kishan Reddy said, “The high-level committee constituted by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Clause 6 of Assam Accord has submitted its report to the government of Assam and its recommendations are under examination of the state government.”

What is Clause 6?

Clause 6 reads, “Constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards, as may be appropriate, shall be provided to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people,” part of the Assam Accord that came at the pinnacle of a movement against immigration from Bangladesh.

Several committees were set up to make recommendations on the implementation of Clause 6. None of them made headway on the provision’s contentious issues. The latest one was set up by the Home Ministry in 2019. Following widespread protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, the government pushed Clause 6.

However, the report on Clause 6 of the Assam Accord still under examination of state govt, the Centre said.
