Barcelona president Josep Bartomeu faces a vote of no confidence after club members on Thursday gathered enough signatures to force a referendum on his future.

Bartomeu would have to step down if two thirds of the votes are against him, and new elections would have to be scheduled. The vote would be held post verification of all the signatures by the club.

Club captain and legend, Lionel Messi stated in an interview recently that he had no faith in the hierarchy of the club and had lost his confidence in the direction in which the club was heading towards. Messi also went on to claim that Bartomeu was aware about his desire to leave the club at the end of last season, however Bartomeu used the complicated details of the player’s contract to block his move away from the club. The club captain accepted that he was aware of a scenario wherein he could enforce legal actions against the Club and it’s President, however he would opt not to escalate the matter in that direction as he owes his entire fame and success to the Club, which he has supported since he was a little boy.

Pressure on Bartomeu increased after the team’s embarrassing 8-2 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, one of the worst in the club’s history. The defeat prompted Bartomeu to announce big changes at the club .

Furthermore, it is also being reported that senior players and members of the Barcelona squad have urged the Club President, Bartomeu to resign from his position as it would be in the best interest of everyone associated with the club from Catalonia.

Former coach Quique Setién, who was replaced by Ronald Koeman after the loss to Bayern, released a statement saying he planned to take legal action against the club owing to his unclear procedure of sacking from the job. He said it wasn’t until Wednesday, the 15th of September that he was officially told that he was fired.
