NTPC Limited, India’s largest power utility, has shared its performance highlights for the quarter and half-year ending September 30, 2024, with updates on installed capacity, energy generation, and efficiency metrics.

Key Performance Highlights:

A. Increase in Installed/Commercial Capacity

  • Installed Capacity (NTPC Group): As of September 30, 2024, NTPC’s installed capacity grew to 76,443 MW, marking an increase of 2,619 MW compared to the same period last year.
  • Commercial Capacity (NTPC Group): The commercial capacity mirrored this growth, rising to 76,443 MW, also up by 2,619 MW.
  • This growth was supported by the commissioning of various projects, including a 660 MW unit at North Karanpura, units in Telangana, and renewable energy projects like NTPC NREL (470 MW) and NGEL (139 MW).

B. Gross Generation/Energy Sent Out

  • Gross Generation: For Q2 FY25, NTPC reported a gross generation of 88.463 BU, down by 2.03% compared to the previous quarter. For the first half of FY25, gross generation stood at 186.349 BU, reflecting a 4.19% increase year-on-year (YoY).
  • Energy Sent Out: In Q2 FY25, NTPC sent out 82.227 BU, down by 2.25% from Q1 FY25. On a YoY basis, energy sent out increased by 4.48% to 173.544 BU for the six-month period ending September 2024.

C. Plant Load Factor (PLF)

  • PLF for Coal: The PLF for NTPC’s coal-based plants stood at 72.78% in Q2 FY25, down from 76.33% YoY.
  • PLF for Gas: Gas-based plants saw a significant drop in PLF, falling to 7.67%, down 11.48% YoY.
  • PLF for Hydro: Hydro plants experienced a sharp decline in PLF, dropping from 59.76% to 27.85%, down by 31.91%.

D. Plant Availability Factor (PAF)

  • PAF for Coal: Coal plants maintained a high availability factor of 84.93% in Q2 FY25, though this was a decline from 90.12% YoY.
  • PAF for Hydro: Hydro plants maintained an impressive PAF of 104.01%, ensuring reliability and performance.

E. Coal Production and Supply

  • NTPC produced 9.03 MMT of coal from its captive mines in Q2 FY25, up by 61.54% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ). For the first half of FY25, coal production stood at 18.67 MMT, showing a 57.82% increase YoY.

F. Gas Consumption

  • Total Gas Consumption: Gas consumption fell significantly by 54.57% QoQ, with consumption dropping to 2.05 MMSCMD in Q2 FY25 from 4.53 MMSCMD in the previous quarter.

G. Average Tariff

  • NTPC’s average tariff for the six-month period ending September 30, 2024, was ₹4.67, up by 1.30% from ₹4.61 in the same period last year.

NTPC continues to expand its capacity, especially in renewable energy and coal production. Despite challenges in gas-based plant utilization and hydro power generation, the company’s steady output and robust coal production ensure its continued leadership in the Indian power sector.
