Virat Kohli was dismissed for a duck in the 1st Test against New Zealand, continuing a challenging run at the No. 3 position in Tests. Kohli was caught by Glenn Phillips off the bowling of William O’Rourke, leaving India struggling at 12/3 in the first session.

Kohli’s dismissal came just after skipper Rohit Sharma was also sent back to the pavilion by Tim Southee. Kohli’s attempt to defend a short of length delivery on off-stump saw the ball nip back and catch the top glove, with Phillips making an excellent diving catch at leg gully. Kohli’s departure left the Bengaluru crowd in dead silence, as New Zealand’s bowlers dominated the early exchanges.

This was Kohli’s first duck in 32 innings, with his last zero coming against New Zealand during the previous tour at the Wankhede Stadium. His record at the No. 3 position remains concerning, with an average of 16.16 from seven innings, with a highest score of 41.

Kohli’s quick departure, alongside Rohit’s, has given New Zealand a dream start, as India looks to recover from early blows.
