Sanjeev Sanyal is an Indian economist and a prominent historian known for his work on the Indian economy and history. He currently serves as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) of India and has been influential in preparing the Economic Survey of India since 2017. In addition to his economic role, Sanyal has written several books on Indian history.
Recently, Sanyal has accepted the role of Chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) in Pune, following the resignation of Bibek Debroy from the position. Debroy stepped down after the Bombay High Court extended interim relief to Vice-Chancellor Ajit Ranade, who had been removed from his position.
Sanyal explained that his duties as Chancellor will focus on broad direction and governance of the institution rather than daily administrative tasks, and this role will not interfere with his ongoing responsibilities as a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
Sanyal was born on August 27, 1970, in Kolkata, and he is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Delhi University.
