Facebook said in a statement that ‘regulation of intermediaries like Facebook falls within exclusive authority of GOI’ after Ajit Mohan, Facebook India’s vice president was summoned by the Delhi government in relation to the Northeast Delhi riots case.
Delhi Assembly’s Peace & Harmony Committee chief Raghav Chadha said that it had summoned Mohan over Facebook’s role in the riots. In response to this, the company asked the committee to withdraw the summons as only the Central government has the authority to regulate intermediaries like Facebook.
The Delhi police has arrested several student leaders like Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fathima, Natasha Narwal and Devangana Kalita and other prominent academicians and charged them with the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection to the case.
