Kangana Ranaut, the director and protagonist of Emergency, has been receiving severe flak and even threats. The movie, wherein she portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the 1975 Emergency, has been criticized by SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and called for a ban on it, saying that the movie will also show Sikhs in bad light in the same manner as the rest of the earlier movies have done in the past.

Dhami’s critique is in tune with ongoing controversies over Kangana’s previous statements, which were deemed anti-Sikh and anti-Punjab. These accusations have attracted more severe reactions to her most recent film, Emergency. The crisis deepened when a video of Punjabi influencer Viky Thomas Singh went viral. Singh was seen eliciting a chilling threat toward the actress by taking names of historic personas responsible for cruelties. Now, Singh’s statement, “Agar hum sar katwa sakte hai toh sar kaat bhi sakte hai,” has raised major concern.

Another man in the recently released video had warned that if the film is actually released, then not just Sikhs but people from every religion would do the same with Kangana too. The video spread like wildfire after a few minutes and created a lot of ruckus in the public, and raised the safety concern for the actress.

Reacting to the threat, Kangana Ranaut had appealed for police protection through social media. She tagged the official handles of police from Maharashtra, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh with an appeal to intervene in the case and help protect her. “Please look into this,” she wrote.
