The Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj is organizing a large protest march, called the ‘Nabanno Abhiyaan,’ to the state secretariat in Howrah today. This demonstration comes 18 days after the tragic rape and murder of a young doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The march, which is expected to draw thousands of students and activists, will begin at College Square.
In preparation for the protest, the state government, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, has deployed 6,000 security personnel to guard the Secretariat and prevent any escalation.
As a result of the march, several major roads will be blocked, leading to significant traffic disruptions. Commuters traveling from Kolaghat via National Highway 16 (NH16) or from Dankuni, Howrah Railway Station, towards Kolkata are advised to use Nibedita Setu instead of the second Hooghly Bridge. Similarly, travelers from Kolkata to Howrah should also opt for Nibedita Setu.
The following roads will be closed:
- Kona Expressway between Nibra and the second Hooghly Bridge
- Andul Road between Alampur and Lakshmi Narayantala Mor
- GT Road between Mallick Fatak and Betaitala
- The section between Mandirtala and the second Hooghly Bridge
