Railway officials stated that around 2:30 am on August 17, at least 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express, train number 19168, derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh.
According to an official cited by news agency PTI, “No injuries have been reported so far. We are still in the process of determining the exact number of coaches that have derailed.”
The loco pilot shed some light on the reason for the derailment, revealing that a boulder struck the cattle guard in front of the engine, causing substantial damage and bending the structure. This incident caused the train to derail, which might have resulted in a far worse disaster if the railway officials had not acted quickly.
According to the Railways, seven trains have been cancelled and three others diverted as a result of the incident to control traffic and ensure passenger safety. The accident resulted in a major delay in train services on this route, impacting many travellers.
The tracks are being cleared to resume normal train services. The railway authorities are also examining the incident to determine the full amount of the damage and take steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
