An entrepreneur from Mumbai disclosed her run in with a job seeker who insulted her through WhatsApp. Senain Sawant who founded a startup named Grump has been finding it hard to get people for the right positions. She posted about this incidence on LinkedIn saying that entrepreneurs and employers alike face challenges in hiring qualified personnel. Ms Sawant had also arranged for a Google meet video interview with the applicant who applied for the post of social media executive on Monday. As she explains, since there was not enough information on this individual’s CV for them to be employed immediately, it was important therefore, for her to talk with them so as to determine their abilities to become a social media manager or if they would need first to undergo training as an intern.”
According to Senain Sawant’s post, “they joined the call with camera off saying they didn’t own computer and iOS update that prevented video calls.” The candidate said they were given a laptop by their former employer when asked by the entrepreneur how they normally worked. Then I asked them if they could connect at another time when their video was working because it was an interview and I needed to see whom I was talking to. “Their tone was off from the start, they weren’t audible to begin with and it seemed like they were out in public from the amount of noise in the background.” They said yes and hung up”. After disconnecting the video call, Ms Sawant too shared some screenshots of the WhatsApp conversation.
The woman pointed out that it was clearly mentioned in the invite that it would be a video interview and she never heard about an iOS update that does not allow video calls as claimed by the candidate. Defensively, the candidate claimed for social media executive role instead of an internship. “A year of work experience is something I am okay with avoiding this one (the role),” said the candidate. The candidate said, “Maybe you need to change your tone because honestly, you don’t sound like someone I can have a legitimate conversation with.” Said by him/her were words akin to b**ch high-flown and haughty. The shocked Ms. Sawant only managed to mutter “Excuse me?” after being verbally abused only once.
However, this did not deter them from insisting, “No one would talk to you”. Shortly after it was shared online did Internet users start commenting about their perspectives regarding it while others offered support about it also through comments made on social media platforms.
