Netflix’s Bridgerton is a huge hit, known for its fresh take on the Regency era with a diverse cast and modern themes. The show, based on Julia Quinn’s historical romance novels and produced by Shonda Rhimes, mixes traditional storytelling with a contemporary approach to diversity and inclusion. It features non-white actors in major roles and explores themes like racial equality and feminism.
However, despite these advancements on screen, there are significant issues behind the scenes. Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury, has spoken out about the ongoing challenges for actors of color in the industry. On the Stirring It Up podcast, Andoh shared her frustrations about how black actors are often treated differently, particularly in terms of lighting.
Andoh pointed out that despite the show’s inclusive narrative, the industry still struggles with how black actors are lit on set. She mentioned that this can make it difficult for her to advocate for herself without feeling like she’s causing trouble. She noted, “I hate doing it because a bit of me is like, ‘Oh I don’t want to make a fuss.’” She emphasized that she wants to focus on her role and perform without having to fight for basic fairness.
Andoh also expressed doubt about whether she’s cast in roles because of her race, or if it impacts her chances of being hired or not. She said, “It’s a dual-psycho thing that goes on the whole time. Did I get that job because [of my race]? Did I not get that job because [of my race]? I don’t want to think about it. I just want to get the job because I’m great, or not get the job because I’m sh**.”
Although Bridgerton has made strides towards inclusivity and has been praised for its diverse casting, the behind-the-scenes reality still lags behind. This highlights the ongoing struggle for genuine equality and fair treatment in the entertainment industry.
