The Los Angeles Chargers are generating buzz with their standout safety duo, Derwin James Jr. and Alohi Gilman, hailed by head coach Jim Harbaugh as the best in the NFL. However, the rest of the safety position is in flux, presenting significant opportunities and uncertainties.

JT Woods, a third-round pick, risks being labeled another draft disappointment, while AJ Finley, an undrafted free agent from 2023, is mainly contributing on special teams. The team also signed veteran Tony Jefferson after a minicamp tryout. Jefferson, who had been working as a scouting intern after retiring, brings valuable experience but hasn’t played a full season since the Chargers’ 12-4 campaign under Anthony Lynn.

Although the Chargers didn’t select a safety in the 2024 NFL Draft, they have two intriguing undrafted free agents (UDFAs) in Florida State’s Akeem Dent and Clemson’s Jalyn Phillips. Dent is known for his athleticism and potential as a center fielder, similar to Woods’s projected role. Phillips, a versatile safety, can cover in the slot or rush the passer. Both UDFAs could also excel on special teams.

The key question now is whether Dent or Phillips can outperform Woods, Finley, or Jefferson. Woods, despite the Chargers’ high investment, has yet to make a significant impact on defense and has been largely overlooked for special teams duties. Finley, chosen by special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken, might have a better chance of sticking around due to his special teams contributions. The decision could come down to Ficken’s preferences rather than solely the defensive coaches or general manager Joe Hortiz.

The Chargers reportedly considered drafting Dent to avoid competition with other teams, and he was also picked by the Michigan Panthers in the UFL draft. While this doesn’t guarantee a roster spot, it suggests that Dent could be a priority.

With two safety spots open and five contenders vying for them, this summer’s training camp is set to be a fierce battle as players fight for a place on the 53-man roster.
