Honor, a prominent player in the smartphone industry, is taking a distinctive approach in integrating AI into its devices. Unlike many competitors focusing on cloud-based AI solutions, which rely on remote servers for processing, Honor is championing “on-device AI.” This on-device AI strategy aims to provide users with more personalized and secure experiences directly from their smartphones.
At the Mobile World Congress Shanghai 2024, Honor unveiled two innovative AI features poised to enhance user interaction and well-being. The first, AI Deepfake Detection, is designed to combat the rising threat of AI-generated deepfakes. Operating directly on the device, this tool scrutinizes video calls frame-by-frame to detect anomalies such as unnatural eye contact, inconsistent lighting, or altered image clarity—indicators that suggest the presence of deepfakes. This proactive approach not only helps users identify potential scams during video calls but also hints at broader applications, potentially extending to video content across social media platforms plagued by AI-generated misinformation.
George Zhao, CEO of Honor, emphasized the significance of on-device AI in understanding user behavior and preferences more intimately than cloud-based alternatives. This focus aligns with Honor’s vision to empower users through AI that adapts to their individual needs without compromising privacy or relying on external data servers.
The second feature, AI Defocus Eye Protection, addresses the growing concern over digital eye strain and nearsightedness caused by prolonged screen exposure. By simulating the effects of defocus glasses, this feature aims to maintain clear central vision while reducing strain on peripheral vision. Honor claims significant benefits in mitigating transient myopia after extended reading sessions, underscoring its potential impact on promoting healthier smartphone usage habits.
Both AI innovations from Honor reflect a commitment to leveraging technology for user welfare and security, paving the way for more intuitive and health-conscious smartphone experiences. As these features are anticipated to roll out on Honor’s flagship devices soon, they represent a step forward in harnessing on-device AI to enrich everyday interactions and safeguard user well-being in the digital age.
