The Detroit Lions made significant moves to bolster their cornerback corps during the 2024 offseason, highlighted by their first-round selection of Terrion Arnold after trading up in the NFL Draft.
Arnold, widely regarded as one of the top two corners in this year’s draft class, is slated to assume a starting role opposite Carlton Davis on the Lions’ defense. The team has high expectations for Arnold, banking on his potential to develop into a shutdown cornerback sooner rather than later, crucial for a Lions squad eyeing serious Super Bowl contention.
Recognizing Arnold’s potential impact, he recently earned a spot on Chad Reuter’s “2024 All-Rookie Team” on NFL.com, where he is touted as an “instant-impact newcomer” from his alma mater, Alabama.
Cornerback was the top need in the draft for the Lions, who were willing to move up for Arnold when he was still available at No. 24. He can combine with veteran trade acquisition Carlton Davis and second-rounder Ennis Rakestraw Jr. to help fortify the position. I expect Arnold to attack the ball for Detroit, likely intercepting and breaking up multiple passes as quarterbacks test the rookie, with his former Alabama teammate, Brian Branch, handling nickel duties.
Last season, the Lions struggled with one of the NFL’s weakest pass defenses, ranking 27th overall. However, with the additions orchestrated by general manager Brad Holmes, including Arnold’s arrival, expectations are high for a significant turnaround in 2024. The Lions’ defensive retooling positions them as a more formidable force in the upcoming season, ready to make a statement on the field.
