Ford Motor is preparing to launch a new electric SUV for international markets that will draw inspiration from its legendary Capri model, which gained popularity in the 1970s and 1980s. The next electric vehicle will be based on the US-based carmaker’s Explorer EV and will be a coupe SUV.

The Detroit automaker has already said that the Capri name will return in a new avatar after being discontinued for almost 40 years. The automaker has unveiled the first official teaser photos of the new electric vehicle, showcasing how unlike it will be from its renowned past.

The first teaser photographs of the Ford Capri electric SUV do not reveal how the famous pony’s design has changed since its rebirth. However, the photographs provide a clear view of some of its current design parts, such as DRL headlights and LED taillights, which reflect the light pattern seen on the car’s famous avatar.

Earlier spy photos showed the Capri’s transformation from a two-door, low-slung sports vehicle to a coupe SUV. Ford Motor’s Capri EV will use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform.
