In a demonstration video posted on X (formerly Twitter), Nightshade showcased the mod in action. With a save file open in one window, they innocently opened the Stardew Valley Wiki in another. Almost instantly, the game restarted, and upon returning to the loading menu, the save file was nowhere to be found.
The mod operates by first requiring the Stardew Valley save to be active and running in-game. It then monitors the titles of all browser windows or tabs open, specifically searching for any containing the words “Stardew Valley Wiki.” If it detects this, it promptly executes the deletion of the save file. Nightshade even added a spiteful touch: the mod now closes the offending browser window automatically, adding insult to injury.
Interestingly, the Hardcore Mode mod was born in response to a humorous article by Hard Drive, which jestingly proposed a similar concept. Titled “Stardew Valley’s New Hardcore Mode Deletes Your Farm if You Open the Wiki,” the article playfully exaggerated the idea, envisioning an official mod where accessing the wiki led to catastrophic consequences. It humorously suggested developer Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone’s response, imagining him commenting that starfruit tasted like players’ tears in this merciless mode. As of now, Barone has not publicly acknowledged the satire.
