As the pressure to boost productivity mounts, many workers are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency, according to new research.

A PwC survey has found that nearly 60% of UK employees now believe generative AI tools could significantly improve their efficiency—a marked increase from the 19% reported last year.

This surge in AI interest aligns with shifting workplace dynamics; nearly two-thirds (60%) of respondents experienced more change at work over the past year, with 41% noting increased workloads.

The PwC survey, which included 56,600 workers across 50 countries, found that almost half (45%) of employees feel overwhelmed by the rapid pace of change, and 40% struggle to understand the necessity of these changes.

Despite this, a substantial majority are prepared to adapt, with three in four expressing readiness to evolve and two in three (65%) feeling excited about new opportunities.

“Workers are motivated and ready to adapt to AI and other changes, but they’re also overwhelmed by nonstop disruption,” said Sarah Moore, PwC UK Head of Workforce. “Even positive change can be stressful when it’s coming from all angles. Employers can help by equipping their workforce with the knowledge and skills to adapt.”

PwC’s report highlights generative AI as a “positive disruptor,” capable of boosting efficiency and helping workers manage their increasing workloads.

Globally, the UK lags in AI adoption. Only 47% of UK workers have used generative AI at work in the past year, compared to 61% globally. Furthermore, only 18% of UK workers use it daily or weekly, compared to 28% worldwide.

Alastair Woods, PwC UK Workforce Transformation Partner, emphasized the need for employer engagement: “Employers must engage employees in the transformation ahead and map out the new skills needed in key parts of the workforce.”

Looking ahead, the report underscores the importance of mutual trust and support between workers and employers. Workers need to trust their leaders to guide them through critical changes, while employers must provide relevant upskilling opportunities to help employees adapt and thrive.

By fostering a clear strategy and supporting their workforce, employers can help mitigate the stress of constant change and enable employees to harness the benefits of AI effectively.
