On the 3rd of September India’s Coast Guard got a distressed call from a cargo-carrying ship. The Sri Lankan Navy stepped in on the 4th. The ship was carrying a tanker MT New Diamond registered in Panama. The ship had a crew of 23 people. Out of these 22 were rescued.
According to sources, the tanker was carrying g 270,000 metric tonnes of crude oil from Kuwait to India. The Sri Lankan Navy said that the commercial owners of the ship have assigned a Singapore-based company for pollution control measure.
5 Indian Navy ships were also engaged in the fire fighting and rescue attempt.
