The Raiders’ defense is showing promise of becoming elite after a strong finish last season, bolstered by the significant addition of defensive lineman Christian Wilkins. However, there’s still some uncertainty at one of the cornerback spots, which could be a potential vulnerability.
On the offensive side, questions abound, mainly revolving around the quarterback position. Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell are in a heated competition for the starting role, leaving fans and analysts alike on the edge of their seats.
If the defense performs up to its potential and either Minshew or O’Connell proves to be more than just serviceable, the Raiders have a solid shot at making the playoffs. But if the quarterbacks falter and the defense doesn’t meet expectations, it could spell trouble for Las Vegas.
Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report outlined a nightmare scenario for the Raiders in 2024, which includes the decline of wide receiver Davante Adams, underperformance by the quarterbacks, and redundancy among their young elite tight ends.
First, the idea that Adams is “continuing to decline” implies he was already on the downturn heading into this season, which is a bit unfair. Adams had to navigate a chaotic offense in 2023, including a head coach change and a switch to a rookie quarterback, yet he still managed to surpass 1,100 yards. While Adams is turning 32 in December and a decline is inevitable, it hasn’t quite started yet.
If Adams does start to decline, it would significantly impact the offense and his trade value if the Raiders consider moving him in the future. His performance is crucial for the team’s success.
The performance of the quarterbacks will ultimately determine the Raiders’ fate this season. They might still reach the playoffs even if neither Minshew nor O’Connell is outstanding, but any postseason success would be limited. If neither quarterback proves to be starting-caliber, the Raiders will likely be in the market for a new quarterback in the 2025 draft, though a mediocre season might leave them out of range for top prospects, as happened this year.
Regarding the tight ends, Gagnon’s concerns might be overblown. With talents like Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, the Raiders have numerous ways to utilize both effectively. The versatility of Bowers should allow for creative deployments that maximize their potential.
In summary, the Raiders are poised for a season filled with possibilities, both good and bad. If everything aligns, they could be playoff contenders. If not, they might be looking at another disappointing year and a search for a franchise quarterback in 2025.
