The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a comfortable victory in Arunachal Pradesh, winning 38 seats and leading in another seven. Meanwhile, the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is set to retain power in Sikkim, with victories in 21 seats and a strong lead in 10 others in the 32-seat assembly.

The counting of votes for the Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh state Assembly elections began at 6 AM today. The elections, which took place on April 19, 2024, saw election authorities aiming to complete the process and announce the results by 2 PM.

In Sikkim, a party needs at least 17 seats to secure a majority and form the government. In the 2019 elections, SKM won 17 seats, leading to Prem Singh Tamang becoming the Chief Minister. This time, with 21 seats already secured and a lead in 10 more, SKM looks set to maintain its hold on the state.

In Arunachal Pradesh, the BJP had already secured 10 seats uncontested in the 60-member assembly. In the 2019 elections, BJP won 41 seats. According to Axis My India exit polls, BJP was projected to win 44-51 seats, Congress 1-4 seats, and NPP and others 2-6 seats. The current results show BJP firmly on track with these predictions.

In a broader context, three poll survey agencies – India TV, News 24-Today’s Chanakya, and India Today – have predicted more than 400 seats for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the Lok Sabha elections.
