The Dallas Cowboys have been navigating the tricky terrain of cap space management, but a recent move has provided them with a much-needed financial boost. With June ushering in a new fiscal landscape, the Cowboys are set to reap the benefits of the release of wide receiver Michael Gallup.

According to Spotrac, the Cowboys are poised to add a substantial $9.5 million to their cap space with Gallup’s departure. While there are still dead-cap hits to contend with, the post-June 1 designation allows Dallas to spread these out over two years, lessening the immediate financial impact. In 2024, they’ll be responsible for $4.35 million, followed by $8.7 million next season.

This newfound flexibility brings the Cowboys’ effective cap space to $12.37 million, as per Over the Cap. While this figure places them in the middle of the pack in terms of NFL teams’ available funds, it grants Dallas the leeway to pursue additional acquisitions and manage their finances throughout the regular season.

Granted, the timing of this windfall may have been more beneficial earlier in the offseason, when free agency was bustling with activity. As it stands, the pool of available free agents has dwindled, with the exception of the safety position.

Meanwhile, Gallup has found a new home with the Las Vegas Raiders, inking a one-year, $1.75 million deal. As he embarks on this new chapter, the Cowboys can now turn their attention to optimizing their roster with the resources at hand.
