The wait is soon going to be over as the talks for the next head coach for the Indian cricket team are about to conclude. According to reports, Gautam Gambhir has finally agreed to join as the next head coach of the Indian national cricket team.
Earlier, there were reports circulating that Gautam Gambhir had not applied for the head coach role, and Shah Rukh Khan had reportedly offered him a blank cheque to be the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) coach for the next ten years.
According to a report in India Today, Gautam Gambhir is set to replace Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the Indian national cricket team. Despite having no prior experience as a head coach of a national side or an IPL team, Gambhir’s role in guiding Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL triumph this year was reportedly enough for the BCCI to seriously consider him as Dravid’s successor.
Gambhir recently took on the role of KKR’s mentor, leaving his job with the Lucknow Super Giants, another IPL side he had joined as a coaching staff member in 2022. The BCCI had invited applications for the head coach’s role by May 27 and received over 3000 forms, including some fake ones from ‘Sachin Tendulkar,’ ‘Narendra Modi,’ and ‘Amit Shah.’
The board is likely to begin the process of interviewing shortlisted candidates soon, with the Cricket Advisory Committee leading the charge.
If Gambhir opts for the Indian team’s head coach role, he will have to bid farewell to the IPL 2024 winners, Kolkata Knight Riders. It seems like KKR’s loss will be the Indian team’s gain.
Gambhir has outshone as a mentor for KKR this year after he took charge, pulling the team up from their weak performance in 2023 to clinching an easy win in the 2024 finals.
