The Central Railway has announced a 63-hour mega block starting at midnight on May 30, leading to the cancellation of 930 local trains. This block is part of platform expansion and widening projects at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in south Mumbai and Thane station.

The platform widening will allow for new amenities such as escalators and broader staircases for Foot Over Bridges (FOBs). The Railways has urged people to avoid using local trains during this period unless necessary.

“A 63-hour mega block for the widening of platform numbers 5 and 6 at Thane will start from Thursday midnight while a 36-hour block for the extension of platform numbers 10 and 11 at CSMT will begin from Friday midnight,” said Rajneesh Goyal, divisional railway manager of Central Railway’s Mumbai division, in a press conference on Wednesday.

From Friday to Sunday (May 31 to June 2), 72 Mail Express trains and 956 suburban train services will be cancelled due to the mega block. Many train routes will also be altered. The work is scheduled to start tonight and will finish on Sunday at 3:30 PM.

During this period, the Railways has requested additional buses from the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to help passengers.

The cancellations include 161 trains on Friday, 534 on Saturday, and 235 on Sunday. Around 1800 local trains run daily across the Main, Harbour, Trans-Harbour, and Uran corridors, serving over 30 lakh commuters. Several mail-express and suburban trains will be short-terminated and short-originated from stations like Wadala, Dadar, Thane, Pune, Panvel, and Nashik.
