People in Maharashtra are getting ready to celebrate their state’s special day on the 1st of May. Maharashtra Diwas is the time of the year when all the Marathi people come together and celebrate their state’s rich history and outstanding accomplishments.

Maharashtra Day 2024: A Brief History

This historical day commemorates the birth of the great state of Maharashtra in 1960. According to the Constitution of India, the states were reorganized based on their usage of language. Before that, Bombay was declared a state, although, the language of Marathi-speaking people was not the only mother tongue spoken there. The Maharashtrian people, the Gujaratis, the Konkanis and the Kutchis were not very happy about the split. Many movements including the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and the Mahagujarat Movement took place and demanded for the state to be split in two. Winning these fights, two new states were proclaimed, Maharashtra and Gujarat.
