In a statement to E! News, Sweeney’s representative expressed disappointment in Baum’s choice to attack another woman instead of offering support and encouragement. The representative emphasized the damaging impact of Baum’s words and called into question her character as a seasoned industry professional.
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman,” a rep for Sydney said in a statement to E! News, adding, “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character.”
Carol Baum’s comments, made during a post-screening event for her film Dead Ringers, sparked outrage and backlash from both industry insiders and fans alike. She explained that she had even opened up the discussion in her USC producing class, asking her students, “Explain this girl to me. She’s not pretty, she can’t act. Why is she so hot?”
