Unilever, the British-Dutch multinational consumer goods company has announced that it will drop the use of fossil fuels from its cleaning products and replace them with renewable or recycled carbon by the year 2030.
The company decided to take the move so that its home care brands like Surf excel, domex , Vim, etc. have lower carbon footprint and to decrease the usage of fossil fuels.
Addressing the situation, president of the home care division of the company Peter ter Kulve said “People want more affordable sustainable products that are just as good as conventional ones. We must stop pumping carbon from under the ground when there is ample of carbon on and above the ground if we can learn to utilize it at scale.”
The company has decided to invest 1 billion euros for the initiative. This massive amount would go towards funding biotechnology research and creating water efficient products.
The company’s cleaning and laundry products make up to 46% of its overall carbon footprint. Now it has decided to replace the petrochemicals with plant based ingridients like marine sources and algae. This will help to reduce the carbon footprint by 20%.
