In its verdict on Monday, the Supreme Court has fined Prashant Bhushan, Re. 1 on the court contempt case. The lawyer-activist was earlier held guilty of contempt for his tweets criticising the Chief Justice of India SA Bobde and the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court has asked Bhushan to pay Re.1 as fine by September 15. If not, he will be sentenced to three months in jail or will be barred from working as a lawyer for three years.

Prashant Bhushan had previously refused to apologise for his tweets and had given 100-page statement saying that his tweets represented a bonafide belief that he holds. He had also said that an apology would be insincere and retraction of the tweets would be a “contempt of my conscience.”
