Ponnala Lakshmaiah, a senior leader of the Congress party and former minister of the united Andhra Pradesh, has resigned from the party.

Lakshmaiah, who has been a part of the Congress party for four decades and has held numerous key positions including being the inaugural Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief, declared his resignation just before the forthcoming Telangana Assembly election. He has been elected as an MLA from the Jangaon Assembly four times. His resignation marks a major shift in the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh.

He said “I feel that I can no longer thrive in such an unjust environment”. The Congress party is yet to respond to this development.
