Wembley is the home of England’s national football team, which has always lit its iconic arch with the colors of different countries. Previously, the arch was lit with the colors of Turkey, Ukraine, and many more in solidarity. However, they will not do the same for Israel following last week’s attacks by Hamas militants.
The Wembley Stadium’s arch was supposed to be lit in blue and white, showcasing solidarity. The UK government was upset with the decision and rebuked the Football Association for the same.
“I am extremely disappointed… and have made my views clear to the FA,” Britain’s Secretary for Culture, Media, and Sport Lucy Frazer said in a post on X.
To show the UK’s support and concern for Israel, they projected the Israeli flag onto Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s sreet residence while the parliament lit itself up with blue and white colors.
