Riders affiliated with Swiggy, the Bengaluru-based food delivery aggregator, have initiated an “indefinite strike” in Mumbai, pressing for increased payouts and improved working conditions, on October 9.

This strike has been organized by the ‘Swiggy unit’ of Rashtriya Karamchari Sena, a workers’ union associated with the Maharashtra-ruling Shiv Sena party. Videos shared on social media depict Swiggy workers conducting bike rallies, holding placards to highlight their demands. The strike has affected Instamart and Swiggy orders in Mumbai especially South Bombay and Andheri regions. They have expressed grave concern for shrinking pay. Rider pointed out that they have to cover 6 kilometers for just ₹20, all while grappling with the soaring fuel prices. “Where we used to earn ₹100, now we are earning only ₹40,” another Swiggy rider alleged. Delivery executives’ earnings comprise three components: the payout per order, which depends on the distance travelled, incentive pay, and surge pay.

The company hasn’t released any official statement yet. This strike in Mumbai follows a similar one by Swiggy riders in Chennai a few months ago, centered around the demand for higher pay-outs per order. In a broader context, this protest aligns with the trend of delivery executives from various platforms expressing concerns about wage reductions, as seen earlier this year with Zomato-owned Blinkit riders launching a strike in Delhi-NCR.
