Special Cell of Delhi Police carried out large-scale search operations at multiple locations connected to the digital news platform, NewsClick. The search operation spanned across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, targeting the offices and residences of journalists and staff members associated with NewsClick.
The operation was initiated in relation to the portal’s purported connections with China. The police seized a significant amount of digital evidence during the raids, including laptops, mobile phones, and data storage devices. Delhi police also sealed the office of NewsClick. Special Cell has lodged a fresh case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and has commenced an investigation. This follows a previous case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against NewsClick for allegedly violating the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) by receiving foreign funds.
The current search operation was based on information provided by a central agency. A previous report had suggested that NewsClick was part of a global network receiving financial backing from American billionaire Neville Roy Singham. The funds were allegedly used for spreading Chinese propaganda. The action has sparked a wave of protest among journalists.
