According to Ajay Rai, who is the newly appointed President of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and Wayanad MP will be contesting the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi.
The decision sets the stage for a major election battle as Rahul Gandhi’s candidacy puts him against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi was defeated by Smriti Irani in Amethi, a former Congress stronghold, by around 55,000 votes.
The 2019 Lok Sabha elections were contested by Rahul Gandhi from Amethi and Wayanad Lok Sabha constituencies and later on, he became the Wayanad M.P after losing to Smriti Irani in Amethi.
It has also been announced by Ajay Rai that if Priyanka Gandhi decides to contest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi from Varanasi, every worker of the Congress party will work to ensure her victory.
These remarks from Ajay Rai came days after Robert Vadra, Priyanka Gandhi’s husband, dropped hints of the possibility of her entering electoral politics.
He said, “She (Priyanka should be in Lok Sabha for sure. She has all the qualifications for it. She would be very good in Parliament and she deserves to be there. I hope that the Congress party accepts and plans better for her.”
